Cinema set to celebrate 100th with screening

CLEVEDON'S historic Curzon Cinema is celebrating its 100th birthday with an open weekend next month.

The cinema, which opened in 1912, is the oldest continually operating picture house and celebrates its special centenary with a free open weekend on April 21 and 22.

The cinema will be throwing open its doors and recreating the atmosphere of the picture house 100 years ago, showing grand films of the period. The Curzon collection of cinema artefacts will also be on display and visitors will be able to look behind the scenes.

A concert by Byron Jones to mark the opening of the newly restored Christie cinema pipe organ is at 2.30pm on April 22.

Music will be played to accompany the silent film, Race for a Life.

A black tie champagne reception in the Oak Room on the evening of April 22 will precede the screening of a restored and re-released version of A Night to Remember – recalling the opening of The Picture House.

The cinema first opened its doors with a matinee to raise funds for the Lord Mayor of London Appeal for the survivors and relatives of those lost in the Titanic disaster days earlier.
